Free knitting patterns?! Well, a few anyway. Happy knittin'!

Button-close Headband

I got this pattern from knitty.com, but I simplified it down to basic short rows without markers! I might be the only one on the planet, but I hate using those damn things.

CO 120 sts using 1 pair US #8/5mm straight needles. Gauge: 20 sts = 4 inches.

Row 1: Work all sts in 2x2 Rib. (k2,p2)

Row 2: Work in 2x2 Rib until last 2 sts, turn work.

Row 3: Sl 1, work 3 sts, work to last 2 sts, turn work..

Repeat Row 3 eighteen times more.

Bind off. Attach button, and you're good to go! My girl friends all love these :)

NOTE: Don't worry about the holes that turning your work creates, it will serve as a hole for your button closure.

Basic Black Ribbed Headwrap
This is my own pattern, it fits really nicely. Use a medium, worsted weight pure wool if you can. Patron is wonderful and they come in an amazing variety of colours that aren't too expensive and can be found at any local craft store, unlike those gorgeous but hard to obtain handspun alpaca yarns *swoons*.

CO 40 sts using 1 pair US #7/4.5mm straight needles. Gauge:6 sts = 1 inch.
Row 1:
k all sts.

Row 2: k4, p2, k4, p2, k4, p4, k4, p2, k4, p2*

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 20-23 inches, lightly stretched.

BO all sts and whip stitch ends together using a tapestry needle.

The beauty of this kind of headwrap is that it allows you to test the length of the piece on yourself, or a friend while it's still on the needle, so be sure to check your fit.

Scandinavian Matt Hat

This is the hat that I made Matt for his birthday (July in San Francisco, what an awful present. I have no idea what I was thinking...anyway.)

Body of Hat
CO 64 sts using 1 pair of US #10 straight needles. Gauge 12 stitches/17 rows = 4 inches.

Row 1: k64*, repeat this row until piece measures about 9 1/2 inches.
For stripes, cut and tie alternating colours every 4 rows.

BO all stitches.

Earflaps (make 2)
CO 15 sts. Decrease first and last sts every row until 3 sts remain, continue to knit until string measures desired length.

Don't forget to add tassels, and a fun pom on top!
